Egypt's tourist resort Sharm el-Sheikh devoid of tourists following the Russian plane crash - Reuters
CAIRO, Sept 10 (Aswat Masriya) - Turkish Airlines will resume flights between Istanbul and the resort city of Sharm al-Sheikh on Saturday after 11 months of hiatus.
Turkey’s national flag carrier suspended its flights to the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in the wake of the downing of a Russian airliner in the Sinai Peninsula in October 2015, killing all 224 people aboard.
The Islamic State group later claimed responsibility for the explosion, saying it had planted a bomb on board the plane that was heading from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg in Russia.
Russia, which suspended its flights to all Egypt since the crash, maintains that the crash was due to a "terrorist attack," while Egypt says that evidence is still lacking as to the cause of the crash.
Egypt’s most active militant group in North Sinai known as Sinai Province, affiliated with Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria, claimed responsibility for downing the plane twice.
