Egyptian authorities have arrested 15 people who are suspected of opening fire on Mahmoud Badr, the co-founder of Tamarod, on Monday, a security source said.

Tamarod’s official website reported that Badr was attacked by machineguns and his car was stolen late on Monday while he was on his way back to his hometown, Shebeen al-Qanater.

The source added to the state news agency that it is a criminal act and not of political nature or related to the ongoing events that the country is facing.

The source denied that it was an assassination attempt and insisted that the suspects' only goal was to steal the car.

Badr was unharmed in the attack.
