CAIRO, Jan 24 (Aswat Masriya) - Six individuals were arrested and a socialist activist was killed on Saturday following the dispersal of a march commemorating the fourth anniversary of January 25 in downtown Cairo by security forces.
Shaimaa al-Sabbagh, a member of the Socialist Popular Alliance Party (SPAP), sustained a birdshot wound during the protest, dying shortly after being transferred to hospital, the party said in a statement.
The Health Ministry Spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar confirmed her death to Aswat Masriya, adding that al-Sabbagh died amid clashes between protesters and security forces near Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo.
Meanwhile, state-run MENA reported the arrest of six individuals in the same clashes, quoting a security source at the Cairo security directorate.
Dozens gathered in downtown's Talaat Harb Square chanting against the army and the police, and firing fireworks, prompting the dispersal of the march by security forces, and arresting six of them, the source added.
The party reported the arrest of five of its members earlier, including its secretary general Talaat Fahmy.
