Egypt will be in a major predicament if the court rules that the parliamentary elections law is unconstitutional next Thursday, Hussein Ibrahim, head of the Freedom and Justice Party’s parliamentary group, said. The court may rule but it has no real authority to dissolve the parliament, Ibrahim said.

“The military council’s constitutional declaration did not specify the entity that has the authority to dissolve the parliament. It is unacceptable for the council to issue a complementary declaration as the legislative authority was transferred to the parliament since it was elected,” Ibrahim told Aswat Masriya.

The Supreme Constitutional Court “may have the right to issue a ruling to dissolve the parliament, yet at the same time it has no authority to actually carry out that ruling. The parliament has the final say,” Ibrahim added.
