CAIRO, Aug 12 (Aswat Masriya) - A tourism policeman was killed on Wednesday when armed assailants shot him in Fayoum south of Cairo, the Interior Ministry said.

He was on his way back from work on a motorcycle when unidentified assailants, also on a motorcycle, shot at him several times, the ministry said in a statement.

The policeman was left with gunshot wounds across the body and was immediately hospitalised but eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Earlier this week, a policeman was killed after unidentified assailants shot at a police transport vehicle on the Cairo-Fayoum road.

Fayoum is a governorate that lies about 90 kilometres south of Cairo.

Bombings and shootings targeting security forces have surged inside Egypt since the military ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, following mass protests against his rule.
