CAIRO, Mar 30 (Aswat Masriya) - Two policemen were injured on Monday while dismantling two explosive devices in the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria, security and medical sources said.

Initially, the improvised explosive devices were found in a garbage can in an east Alexandria neighbourhood. However, civil protection personnel decided to dismantle them in their headquarters away from residents, Sherif Abdel Hamid, the head of Alexandria's police investigation unit said.

Ibrahim al-Roubi, a top Alexandria health official said one of the injured policemen suffered from shrapnel wounds in the abdomen, while the other had his left leg amputated.

They were taken to a military hospital given that their conditions were unstable, the health official added.

Bombings and shootings have surged across the country since July 2013, with the vast majority of them taking place in North Sinai, although other parts of the country have been hit.

Attacks in general target security forces but civilians have been affected.

Just less than a week ago, a 10-year-old girl was killed when an explosive device detonated outside her school in Fayoum south of Cairo.
