CAIRO, Sept 9 (Aswat Masriya) – The Giza Criminal Court sentenced on Tuesday Islamist politician Hazem Salah Abu Ismail to a year's hard labour for insulting a police officer.

Abu Ismail was arrested in July 2013 amid the crackdown on Islamists following the ouster of former president Mohamed Mursi.

The court accused Abu Ismail of insulting a police officer in a video released online on December 30, 2012. The defendant is heard insulting the police and then minister of interior Ahmed Gamal al-Deen, according to the court.

Abu Ismail was sentenced to seven years in prison on April 16 for forging documents during the 2012 presidential elections.  He was accused of forging his mother's nationality in the official papers submitted to the High Electoral Committee in the 2012 presidential elections.

Abu Ismail, a lawyer and Islamist figure with a wide following, was disqualified from the presidential race after reports that his mother held a US passport.

Egypt's election law bans candidates who, themselves or their parents, carry any nationality other than Egyptian.

The Islamist preacher was also sentenced to one year's hard labour on January 20 for insulting the Egyptian judiciary.
