CAIRO, Jan.14 (Aswat Masriya)-North Sinai security forces killed 30 militants and injured 10 as "terrorist elements" attempted to attack a military ambush in south Sheikh Zuweid, said the army spokesman on Thursday.

He added that the attack resulted in the death of four military personnel and the injury of eight others.

Security forces have been engaged in a "war against terrorism" as militancy surged significantly in North Sinai since the military's ouster of former President Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, following mass protests against his rule.

The armed forces along with interior ministry launched last September "Martyr's Right" military operation which was dubbed by the military as Egypt’s “largest” military action against “terrorists” in North Sinai. It has claimed the lives of more than 500 militants in the area.

The operation's second phase is currently on going in North Sinai.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had declared a state of emergency and a curfew in October 2014 in the border province for an initial three months in reaction to a militant attack that 33 security personnel killed.

The state of emergency has been in place since then.
