Egypt's Mahalla textile workers on Tuesday said they will not take part in festivities to celebrate Labour Day tomorrow, adding that they will stage protests to denounce what they called deliberately marginalising them and not responding to their demands.
First-shift workers will march to the city council on Wednesday, then head to al-Shoun Square to express their frustration with the deteriorating conditions in Egypt, especially those of workers, Magdi Sherif, a Mahalla textile labour leader, said.
The textile company's decision to retroactively deduct 10 percent from a total of 220 pounds that has been disbursed monthly since October 2011 as insurance coverage caused the workers to revolt, Sherif stated.
The workers set May 17 as an ultimatum, saying that they will completely stop working if the deduction is put into effect.
Leaflets have been distributed inside the company to urge people to participate in tomorrow's protests, Sherif added.
