Twenty Azhar university students were arrested on Wednesday for participating in riots that erupted into clashes, a security official told a local news channel.

Mahmoud Sobeiha, Azhar University security head, said that the arrested students will be handed over to the security forces, who currently on campus in a phone interview with privately owned ONTV.

"Some students attacked the university's administrative building and vandalized its property. They damaged university documents and fired rubberbullets," said an Interior Ministry statement issued Wednesday.

Sobeiha added that the situation at the university is now under control after the police entered campus following a governmental approval.

Students of Azhar University have staged several protests since the beginning of the new Academic year in September against the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Mursi was ousted by the military in July following mass protests against his rule, which enraged Islamists.
