CAIRO, Mar 6 (Aswat Masriya) - Egypt's Press Syndicate postponed on Friday its midterm elections for two weeks for lack of quorum.
Holding the elections required the attendance of 4600 members of the syndicate, which represents 50 percent plus one of the syndicate's members, as per the syndicate's bylaws. Only 1009 journalists enrolled at the assembly.
Karem Mahmoud, secretary general of the syndicate, said in a statement that according to the syndicate's bylaws, the committee overseeing the elections would call for another assembly in two weeks, on March 20, when elections are expected to be held.
Mahmoud said that the required number of members needed to attend the next assembly to allow for holding the elections would be 2400, which represents 25 percent plus one of the syndicate's members, as per the bylaws.
The Supreme Administrative Court overturned on Wednesday a court ruling which halted the elections.
The elections will see contenders run for the position of head of the syndicate and for six seats in the syndicate's board, half the number of seats.
