CAIRO, Oct 22 (Aswat Masriya) – The explosion which occurred outside Cairo University on Wednesday was caused by an explosive device planted in the natural gas pipeline, said head of the South Giza Prosecution Medhat Mekki.

The blast left 11 injured, the prosecution announced in a statement.

Mekki told Aswat Masriya that the device remotely exploded, using a cell phone. He added that the prosecution found the remains of the cell phone used in the detonation which targeted the security personnel stationed in the area.

The explosion, which occurred outside the university's main gate, left four police officers, two conscripts and five citizens injured, the public prosecution said. The ministry of interior had earlier reported 10 injuries as a result of the explosion.

Egypt's security forces have intensified their security measures in North Sinai in reaction to repeated militant attacks that target army and police officials, which rose significantly since the military ouster of former President Mohamed Mursi last year. The attacks soon expanded to other areas of the country, including the capital.

A fact-sheet prepared by Egypt's ministry of foreign affairs put the death toll for terrorism acts which took place since January 2011 and until April 2014 at 971, including 664 security personnel.

A triple blast occurred outside Cairo University on April 2, killing a police officer and wounding five other security personnel.
