Egypt court orders retrial of ex-PM Nazif on graft charges

Egypt's Cassation Court annulled on Thursday a criminal court's order that sentenced former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif to three years in prison for graft charges and ordered his retrial before another court.

A Cairo criminal court sentenced Nazif to three years last September and fined him nine million Egyptian pounds ($1.48 million) for illegally acquiring land and squandering public funds.

Nazif appealed the sentence, arguing that the fine does not match the size of the fortune that he allegedly made during his post under the Hosni Mubarak regime.

Nazif served as prime minister from July 2004 until the 2011 uprising that toppled Mubarak.
