CAIRO, May 13 (Aswat Masriya) - Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak who was recently sentenced to three years in maximum security prison has already spent the time during preventative detention, a top security source said on Wednesday. 

The amount of time spent in pretrial and preventative detention can be discounted from a subsequent prison term, according to Egyptian law. 

Prosecutors have informed prison authorities that Mubarak is not imprisoned for any other case, Hassan al-Sohagi, the assistant to the interior minister for prison affairs told Aswat Masriya. 

As for Mubarak's two sons, who were sentenced alongside their father this week, Sohagi said the amount of time they spent in preventative detention is still being calculated and there are no formal notices on them yet.  

On Saturday, a Cairo court sentenced former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and his sons Alaa and Gamal to three years of maximum security prison in a retrial for charges of embezzling public funds. 

For the sons, this sentence is a reduction from the initial sentence, where they were handed a four-year sentence each, in May 2014. At the time, Mubarak was sentenced to three years. 

After Saturday's ruling, Alaa and Gamal were taken to Tora prison, where they will remain until whether or not they will serve time is determined. 

Meanwhile, Mubarak was taken to a military hospital where has been residing for months.  

The former president and his sons have faced several charges since Mubarak ,87, was removed from power after the January 2011 uprising. 

A Cairo court dropped last November corruption charges against Mubarak and his two sons due to the expiry of the statute of limitations in this case.

Egypt's Court of Cassation is scheduled to issue a decision on whether to retry the trio for the aforementioned charge on May 7.
