Cairo's security headquarters refused to release activist Ahmed Douma on Tuesday although the required bail was paid, Douma's lawyer said.

An Egyptian court had earlier ordered prominent political activist Ahmed Douma's release after he paid a 5,000 Egyptian pounds bail.

Once the bail Tanta Criminal Court had ordered yesterday was paid, Douma was transferred to Cairo's security headquarters to be released but the directory did not release him, lawyer Ali Suleiman told Aswat Masriya.

"I was verbally informed that Douma was detained for involvement in clashes that had taken place at the Muslim Brotherhood's headquarters in Mokattam," Suleiman stated.

The court will consider Douma’s appeal to a six-month jail sentence in October.

Douma was accused of insulting the president and spreading false information with the purpose of disrupting public order.

The activist had called President Mohamed Mursi a “criminal, murderer, and a fugitive from justice” on satellite channels.
