Sudan is committed to the Nile waters agreement with Egypt, a high profile Sudanese official said on Wednesday, stressing that cooperation is the only means of settling disputes between the Nile Basin countries.

Sudan announced its support for Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam last week, which has raised concerns about decreasing the water share of the Nile’s downstream countries (Egypt and Sudan).

The unnamed Sudanese official said that the Ethiopian project came after consultations and understandings between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan, reported the Middle East News Agency.

He added that experts from the three countries have studied the issue.

The idea of the Ethiopian dam goes back to the sixties, according to the Sudanese official.
