Potential presidential candidate, Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, has stated that accurate application of Sharia (Islamic law) “protects the rights of all”, claiming that the challenge Egypt is facing is the flawed application of Islam.

In a popular conference in Minya, Tuesday evening, Aboul Fotouh said that some ignorant forces have spread fear among Coptic Christians and even Muslims from Sharia.

“Sharia is truth, justice, mercy, benefit and solidarity", he said.

Aboul Fotouh insisted that Sharia must be applied by politicians according to the path of Islamic experts "not everyone who claims they are experts on religion."

The presidential candidate stressed on the importance of protecting the elections from fraud through high participation of at least 90% and civilian supervision, to ensure the transparency of the process.
