CAIRO, March 3 (Aswat Masriya) A police sergeant was killed on the spot after unknown gunmen opened fire at him outside the security directory of Upper Egypt's Beni Suef on Monday, said an Interior Ministry statement.

Hassan Sayed Hussien was en route to work when he was shot dead, the ministry's statement added.

State television reported that assailants were riding a motorcycle.

At least 250 policemen and amry soldiers were killed in repeated attacks by militants since the army ousted Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in July after mass protests against his rule.
