Thousands of Assiut residents gathered on Monday to hold a funeral for three people who were killed in confrontations on Sunday in light of anti-regime demonstrations against Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

“Down with the Muslim Brotherhood’s supreme guide,” the mourners chanted along with other anti-regime slogans against the president and his regime.

The Wafd Party in Assiut held the Brotherhood and the Islamist group al-Gamaa al-Islamiya responsible for the deaths and injuries.

The party accused Islamist leaders of encouraging their supporters to attack unarmed civilians under the cover of “jihad” for God.

Assiut Governor Yehia Keshk urged Egyptians to practice self-restraint and avoid violence and vandalism.
