Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Cairo’s Tahrir square and several cities on Friday in a million-man protest for “Insistence” to call for trying figures of the former regime and implementing the political rights law which, if applied, will ban ex-prime minister Ahmed Shafiq from competing for president.

Many political parties and powers, including the Muslim Brotherhood, Revolution Youth Coalition, Revolution Youth Union, April 6 movement, National Front for Justice and Democracy, Kefaya movement and Al-Wasat Party, are particapting in today’s protests.

Demonstrators chanted “The people want to purge the judiciary” and “Tahrir says Ahmed Shafiq is part of the old regime”, Al-Jazeera Mubasher channel reported.

A number of participants hung a large banner saying “The people want the political exclusion law implemented and the general prosecutor dismissed.”

Scores marched from Al-Fath mosque till they reached Tahrir where they chanted “Down with the military rule.”

A march headed from Tahrir until it reached Talaat Harb square and the High Court calling for purging the judiciary and dismissing the general prosecutor.

In Alexandria, a protest organised by the National Coordination Authority started at Al-Qa’ed Ibrahim mosque after Friday noon prayers to call for the retrial of Mubarak, his wife and his sons, Gamal and Alaa based on new evidence.

Protesters chanted against the judiciary and the rule of the military council.

In Suez, around 200 members of Suez Youth Bloc and April 6 movement in addition to some Brotherhood members and Salafists organised a protest after Friday noon prayers in Al-Arba’een square calling for justice for the martyrs, forming a civil presidential council and implementing the political exclusion law to ban Shafiq.
