CAIRO, Dec 1 (Aswat Masriya) – A group of political movements announced on Monday launching a campaign entitled "Try them" to push for holding "serious trials" for "all political and financial corruption crimes which affected national security."

The group, the Democratic Current, released a statement on Monday condemning the court ruling dropping the charges against former President Hosni Mubarak over complicity in the murder of protesters.

"The Egyptian people have issued their verdict against the corruption of tyrant Mubarak and his regime ... in a great revolution that swept the country ..." the statement read.

The Current also called on the prosecutor general to swiftly challenge the court verdict against Mubarak.

Egypt's top prosecutor announced on Saturday he will challenge the Cairo Criminal Court's decision to drop the case against Hosni Mubarak.

They stressed the importance of extending the statute of limitations in public funds' cases.

Mubarak and his two sons Alaa and Gamal were accused of exploiting their influence in Salem's favour after the latter granted them five villas in the Sinai resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh. The judge heading the trial, Mahmoud al-Rashidi said that the statute of limitations in this case has expired, and therefore the court lacks jurisdiction to rule on it.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi mandated as well the Legislative Reform Committee to study possible amendments of the criminal procedures law in a manner which meets the recommendations of the court which ruled in Mubarak's case.

The Democratic Current also announced its intention to draft a law governing transitional justice. It urged other interested parties to join in the drafting process, the outcome of which will be presented to the executive authority.

The Current condemned the use of violence by the security forces against "peaceful" protests that erupted in anger over the verdict.

Two protesters were killed, and 13 others were injured Saturday evening in clashes with police forces in Abdel Moniem Riad square in downtown Cairo, the ministry of health said.

The Democratic Current includes al-Dostour Party, the Social Popular Alliance Party, the Popular Current, and the Egyptian Social Democratic Party.

The court also acquitted on Saturday Mubarak's Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and four of his aides on charges of inciting and aiding the killing of 238 protesters.

Mubarak and his interior minister were sentenced to life in prison in 2012 for the same charges before an appeals court ordered their retrial. The retrial began in April, 2013.

In May, a Cairo court sentenced Mubarak to three years in prison on embezzlement charges.

He is serving time in a military hospital in Cairo, where he returned upon Saturday's ruling.
