Violence impedes the democratic process in Egypt, the U.S. State Department said on Thursday on its official Arabic Twitter page.

The U.S. government added, "Violence also impedes the Egyptians' ability to develop and achieve economic recovery."

Urging Egypt to end all political detentions, the U.S. State Department followed up with another tweet saying, "We consistently called for an end to all political detentions and we will continue to do so."

Relations between Egypt and the U.S. turned unsteady after the military's ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in July, which was prompted by mass protests against his rule.

The American administration said in mid-October that it would stop giving Egypt tanks, fighter jets and rockets, along with a financial aid of 260 million dollars.

The U.S. has been providing Egypt with an annual aid worth 1.55 billion dollars, 1.3 of which is military aid, for 30 years.
