CAIRO, Mar 7 (Aswat Masriya) - A Muslim Brotherhood statement condemned the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) report about the police and army crackdown on a Brotherhood sit-in in Cairo last August.

The statement described the NCHR's report as a crime and a death certificate for the council, adding that it is filled will fallacies and lies.

In a report by the fact-finding committee which the council formed, the committee said that the sit-in at Rabaa al-Adaweya Square was not peaceful due to the presence of armed men who used peaceful demonstrators and human shields.

Security forces gave demonstrators only 25 minutes to leave the camp sight and used disproportionate power against armed protesters, the report stated.

On 14 August 2013, police and army broke up Brotherhood camps in Rabaa and Nahda squares by force.

Hundreds of demonstrators and dozens of policemen were killed on that day.

The sit-ins were staged to protest the removal of former President Mohamed Mursi from power in July 2013.

This report is "a revival of the massacre's memory" and will deepen the wounds, the Brotherhood statement said.

The report aims to underestimate the brutal nature of the crime and holds only the police accountable, not the army, hence distancing Defence Minister, Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, from the crime, it added.

The committee's report primarily reflects the Egyptian government's version of the events. Yet in an unusual step, the committee partially blamed the police for the casualties yet ignored the army's role in the clearing process.
