CAIRO, Nov 30 (Aswat Masriya) Deputy Prime Minister Ziad Bahaa el-Din said on Saturday that he is against the new protest law, pointing out that it restricts the right to peaceful demonstration and that it should have been voted on by an elected parliament.

Bahaa el-Din also criticized the timing of issuing such a law, expressing concern that it would only divide the people further.

He explained that rethinking the law would not harm the standing of the interim government and reaffirmed his commitment to a democratic and peaceful transition.

The law was originally introduced under President Mohamed Mursi's administration, but public disapproval stopped it from being issued.

The law compels those who plan protests to notify the interior ministry three days prior to their demonstration and to obtain permission from the police before gathering.

It grants the police a green-light to use force to disperse protests and bans sit-ins altogether.
