Egypt’s committee of legal experts charged with amending the constitution has set a period of one week starting Monday to receive suggestions from political parties and the public regarding the proposed constitutional amendments.

Interim President Adli Mansour has issued a decree for legal experts to start amending the constitution, which was suspended this month by the military following mass protests against deposed president Mohamed Mursi.

The committee, made up of 10 legal experts and senior judges, convened at the Shura Council (upper house of parliament) on Sunday for the first time.

The president’s constitutional advisor and rapporteur of the committee, Ali Awad, said that Sunday’s meeting was to determine their action plan, which will be put into effect starting Tuesday.

He added that the panel is in a permanent session throughout the week in order to consider proposals and review all articles of the constitution that was drafted by an Islamist-dominated assembly last year.

“Any alterations in the articles that are being amended will be submitted to vote inside the committee,” Awad said, stressing that the committee members were selected according to their legal experience.
