Final ballot results of Egyptians living abroad on the country's new constitution indicate that 66 percent (160, 077) have voted for the constitution whereas 34 percent (74, 914) have voted against it.

Polls were extended for six days to allow those who live outside major cities to mail their ballots.

The counting of ballots took place immediately after the polls closed.

The total number of Egyptian expats who cast their votes was 25,300 out of 586, 801 registered voters, according to a local newspaper.

Between six and eight million Egyptians live abroad, mostly in Europe, North America and the Arab Gulf region, according to official reports.

Local polls were conducted on Saturday in the first round of the referendum on a draft constitution written by an Islamist-dominated assembly, while the second round is scheduled for December 22.
