CAIRO, Jan 20 (Aswat Masriya) – Egypt’s Embassy in Yemen resumed operations on Tuesday, citing "improvement in the security situation", the Egyptian ambassador in Yemen said.

This comes after a one day suspension of activities caused by fighting in the Yemeni capital on Monday in the vicinity of the presidential palace in Sanaa between the Yemeni army and the Houthis, a Shia rebel movement which controls parts of Yemen. A ceasefire came into effect later in the day.

Ambassador Youssef al-Sharkawi told Aswat Masriya that activities in the embassy and all of its affiliated offices including the military, cultural and press offices have resumed and "are operating normally".

Sharkawi yesterday said the suspension of embassy activities was temporary and came as part of the shutdowns "of all foreign embassies" in Yemen "out of fear" that diplomats and embassy staff may be affected by developments in the country.

The Egyptian school which was also shut down amid the clashes, has resumed operations as well, he added.

Following the intense fighting, the Egyptian ministry of foreign affairs expressed concern in a statement on Monday, urging all Yemenis to "completely stop the use of weapons." Egypt also called on all political parties in Yemen to take the responsibility of seeing the country out of the "political and security crisis."
