CAIRO, Jan. 23 (Aswat Masriya) – Security personnel’s death toll from last week's Giza blast rose to eight after the death of a National Security officer Saturday morning, an assistant to the interior minister told Aswat Masriya.

The most recent casualty succumbed to his injuries inside a hospital, Major General Ahmed Hegazy said.

An explosion occurred in an apartment in a Giza district on Thursday killing ten individuals, according to Giza’s Emergency Prosecution Director Mohamed al-Tamawy.

Tamawy had said that the deaths included seven police personnel and three civilians.

The interior ministry said in a Thursday statement that security forces raided an apartment reported to have been harbouring criminals in the Maryouteya area in Giza when an improvised explosive device detonated as an explosives’ expert was dismantling the devices.

The ministry blamed “elements” affiliated with the banned Muslim Brotherhood, saying they were planning to carry out acts of hostility against public institutions and vital facilities.

On Friday, the interior ministry posted names and photographs of five policemen killed in the attack.

An ISIS- affiliated group in Egypt claimed the attack in statements circulated on social media on Friday. The statements said that 10 security personnel were killed and 20 others were injured.

Aswat Masriya couldn't independently verify the authenticity of the claim.

Explosions have been a frequent occurrence across the country, with the Sinai Peninsula being the most targeted area by militants. However, several explosions have also taken place in Greater Cairo. Security personnel and vital facilities are increasingly targeted in the attacks
