The "Strong Egypt" Party rejected the new law on demonstrating in Egypt, saying that it is "arbitrary" and can only come from an authority looking for its security and survival at the expense of people's freedoms and rights.

"Laws have no real impact once an interim or elected president signs them; they are only applicable when they express the people's needs and seek their rights. If they go against that, they will merely be ink on paper," the party said in a statement published on its Facebook page on Thursday.

The party emphasized the need to stand up to what it called the mentality of oppression, adding, "We will exert all political effort to fail any law that aims to restrict freedoms and diminish rights."

The new law on demonstrating in Egypt, approved by Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi, grants the Interior Ministry the right to break up demonstrations by force following formalities and completely prohibits the right to stage sit-ins.
