CAIRO, Jun 30 (Aswat Masriya) - Moruners gathered in a military funeral on Tuesday to lay to rest Egypt's slain top prosecutor Hisham Barakat, who was killed in a car bomb in Cairo a day earlier, amid an outpouring of condemnations.

Leading the way in the funeral was President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, with Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb next to him.

Speaking at the funeral, Sisi said the hand of "prompt justice" is "tied" with laws, but "we will work on amending the law to achieve justice."

The prosecutor general eventually succumbed to wounds sustained when his motorcade was bombed on Monday, while he was on his way to work.

Local and global condemnations quickly poured in, from the White House, France and the United Nations, among others.

Barakat was appointed as Egypt's prosecutor general in July 2013, shortly after Mursi's ouster. He replaced Talaat Abdallah, whose appointment as top prosecutor by Muslim Brotherhood politician and then-president Mohamed Mursi in November 2012 prompted nationwide protests.

After his death, the assistant prosecutor general, Zakaria Abdel Aziz Othman was tasked with filling in his position as acting prosecutor general.

Barakat's office, the country's High Court Building has been targeted before. In March, a bomb exploded in front of the main gate of the building in central Cairo, killing two and leaving nine injured.

The prosecutor general's targeting came shortly after a video was released through a twitter account affiliated with Sinai-based militant group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, purporting to show the killing of judges in an incident in May.

The video starts with footage from inside courts, accusing judges of "acquitting the criminals."

On May 20, Ansar called for attacks on judges in a recording released on Twitter accounts affiliated with the group.

Earlier in May, three prosecutors and a driver were killed when gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in North Sinai's al-Arish city.
