NORTH SINAI, May 7 (Aswat Masriya) - Two conscripts were killed in a shooting on a central security camp in North Sinai's Rafah early Thursday, police sources said.

The sources told Aswat Masriya the drive-by shooting was conducted by unidentified assailants. Security forces shot back at them, yet they managed to escape.

The Ministry of Interior identified the assailants as "smugglers" in a statement released on Thursday.

The deceased conscripts received gunshot wounds to the chest, which caused their death, the sources said.

Militancy inside Egypt has seen a significant rise since July 2013, with the military ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, following mass protests against his rule. Most attacks target security forces in North Sinai.

At least 115 suspected militants were killed by the armed forces in North Sinai last month alone, according to statements by army spokesman Mohamed Samir.
