CAIRO, Jan 22 (Aswat Masriya) - Egypt's prosecutor general ordered on Thursday the release of 100 students to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the January 25 uprising and police day, state-run MENA reported.

Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat ordered the release of the students, who are enrolled in different academic stages, out of fear for their "academic future", MENA added.

According to a Democracy Index report published in December 2014, students were at the forefront of protesting groups in 2014, with 226 protests recorded.

The Index reported in November 2014, that around 448 students were arrested since the start of the 2014 academic year, as well as two faculty members. Almost 198 students were referred to investigation while 118 others were suspended. University administrations also suspended 10 faculty members.

Democracy Index is a research project issued by the Cairo-based International Development Centre to monitor protests rate in Egypt.

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said during his visit to the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, that he was going to consider the release of a number of prisoners who were not involved in acts "harming the country", and will issue his decision in the coming days, MENA reported.
