The constituent assembly’s judicial authority committee finished on Sunday discussing all the judicial authority matters in the new constitution including the military judiciary and the jurisdiction of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Taymour Mostafa Kamel, rapporteur of the committee, said on Sunday.

The committee confirmed the judiciary’s independence as every judicial body will have a constitutional text as agreed upon during the sessions, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported Taymour as saying to reporters covering elections.

The representative of the military court demanded adding the military judiciary’s jurisdiction to the chapters of judicial authorities in the new constitution.

A number of the committee members rejected this step and expressed their preference for maintaining “the military judiciary” as it is in the 1971 constitution and allowing it to rule only in military crimes.

They also called for specifying the powers of the military judiciary by legislation.
