Court sentences 12 to prison for Suez violence

Muslim Brotherhood protest in Suez on December 6, 2013 - Aswat Masriya

CAIRO, Jun 6 (Aswat Masriya) - An Egyptian criminal court sentenced on Saturday 12 individuals to two years' maximum security prison for attempted murder during violence in the canal city of Suez in 2013.

Six other defendants were acquitted during the trial. All defendants are believed to be supporters of the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

The incident dates back to December 2013, when security forces arrested 18 individuals following violence between security forces and Brotherhood supporters in Suez.

The prosecution charged the defendants with "attempted murder, committing acts of violence, spreading chaos, displaying force and terrifying citizens."

Egypt listed the Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation in December 2013 and insists it is behind the stringent wave of militancy which has targeted security personnel. The Brotherhood continuously denies this.
