Court sentences 19 to life in absentia for property tax building arson

CAIRO, Nov 15 (Aswat Masriya) - The South Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Saturday 19 defendants accused of arson attack against the property tax building to life in absentia, obliging them to pay reparation for the damages.
The court also suspended the proceedings of 14 other defendants granted presidential pardon by Former President Mohamed Mursi.
The property tax building in Abdeen was torched during the events that broke out near the ministry of interior in reaction to the death of over 70 football fans in Port Stadium in February 2012. The event was dubbed by the media as the Port Said "massacre".
The prosecution charged the 33 defendants with vandalism, resistance of authorities, possession of weapons, damaging public property, and assaulting public employees while on the job.
Massive popular demonstrations broke out in Cairo in solidarity with the Port Said stadium victims, demanding the names of the killers be revealed and prosecuted, and calling for retribution.
