CAIRO, Mar 4 (Aswat Masriya) - Egypt's Court of Cassation turned down on Wednesday a request for retrial for two policemen convicted of torturing to death Khaled Said, upholding their prison sentences.

Said was brutally beaten to death while in police custody in July 2010 in the coastal city of Alexandria. His death is seen as one of the early triggers of the 2011 urpsing which toppled the regime of Hosni Mubarak.

The policemen were appealing a decision issued by the Alexandria Criminal Court in March 2014, sentencing them to 10 years in maximum security prison in March 2014 for the torture and killing of Said.

The Court of Cassation's decision is final, leaving no more room for appeals.

The defendants had initially been sentenced to seven years in prison in October 2011, when they were found guilty of unlawful arrest, brutality and torture. However, a court cancelled the verdict in December 2012 and ordered a retrial in the case.
