CAIRO, Aug 13 (Aswat Masriya) - Security forces dispersed on Wednesday a student protest staged outside Cairo University decrying the expulsion of university students.

Students attacked security forces with fireworks before security used teargas to force them back inside the university campus, reported state-run Al-Ahram. 

At least 94 students were expelled from Cairo University throughout the past academic year. While Cairo University President Gaber Nassar says that most of those expelled were referred to prosecution on vandalism charges, student movements suggest the expulsions were mostly random. 

The pro-Mohamed Mursi "Students against the coup" movement has been organising protests against the former Islamist president's military ouster throughout the past academic year. Protests have often devolved into clashes with security forces.

The past academic year is the deadliest, with at least 16 students killed amid protests on campus, according to the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression's Student Observatory.
