CAIRO, Feb 18 (Aswat Masriya) – The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said there is "no contradiction" between backing a political solution in Libya and empowering the "Libyan government" by lifting the ban on arms sales to the government.

An arms embargo has been imposed on the sale of weapons to Libya by the United Nations, since 2011.

The ministry said in a statement, released shortly ahead of a United Nations Security Council meeting on Libya, that there is "no talk of any request for foreign military intervention in Libya."

Egypt launched airstrikes on Libyan militant targets on Monday after a video released on Sunday showed the beheading of 20 Egyptian nationals and another man, who is not believed to be Egyptian.

The Foreign Ministry said a draft resolution to back the "legitimate Libyan government" will be put forward to the United Nations Security Council, due to convene tonight. Egypt's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Badr Abdelatty said in a statement the convention was called for by Libya and Egypt.

The ministry said that the resolution has been adopted by the Arab bloc and will be presented to the council by the bloc's current representative, Jordanian Dina Kawar.

The purpose of the draft resolution is to support the Libyan government in its fight against terrorism, the ministry said.

The men responsible for the beheadings are believed to belong to a Libyan division of Islamic State Fighters in Iraq and Syria.

Islamist militant group Fajr Libya or Libya Dawn has taken over Libyan capital Tripoli since August 2014.

The government of Libya, which Egypt recognises, has since been forced to operate from the eastern city of Tobruk.
