Building collapse kills 7 in Cairo's Shubra neighbourhood

CAIRO, Oct 4 (Aswat Masriya) - Seven people were killed and two injured when a building collapsed in Cairo's densely-populated Shubra neighbourhood on Sunday. 

The four-storey building collapsed while undergoing renovations by the owner, Gamal Halawa, director of civil protection in Cairo told state-run news agency MENA. 

Civil protection and ambulance units are currently trying to rescue a woman underneath the rubble and are searching for other victims in the site. 

Many buildings across Egypt were constructed in violation of safety standards and regulations. Others are threatened with collapse because of a lack of maintenance. 

Despite the risk, residents continue to occupy these building because for lack of alternatives. With a population of 89.6 million, Egypt is the Arab world's most populous country.
