An official source at Egypt's public prosecution denied on Sunday media reports stating that the prosecutor-general is looking into legal complaints against a group of prominent democracy and rights activists.

The source said in a statement to state television that news on investigations with political activists on charges of receiving foreign funding were entirely false.

The prosecution’s official asked reporters and journalists to maintain accuracy so as not to stir up public opinion and cause confusion over false news.

Various media outlets, including Reuters, had circulated a story confirming that the prosecutor received complaints against 35 political figures, including activist Ahmed Maher, blogger Ahmed Douma, and liberal politician Amr Hamzawi, that accused them of accepting money from the United States and other countries.

The news were said to be leaked by WikiLeaks.
