Eight people were injured in violent confrontations that broke out in light of the first session of ousted President Mohamed Mursi’s trial on Monday, the head of the Emergency Authority said. 

The ex-president’s opponents and supporters clashed as hundreds of people gathered on Monday to protest Mursi’s trial, repeating slogans against the army and police. 

Ahmed al-Ansary added that the clashes that took place by the High Court left five people injured, four of whom were released from the local hospital after receiving medical attention, reported the state news agency. 

Clashes also erupted in Egypt’s second largest city, Alexandria, injuring two people who were also sent to a local hospital. 

One man was injured in Sharqiya and was transferred to al-Zaqazeeq University Hospital. 

Mursi and his top aides stood trial on Monday on charges of inciting violence against the regime’s opponents in clashes that killed about a dozen people last year. 

The trial was adjourned to January 8 as Mursi insisted he is still the legitimate president of the region’s most populous country and refused to follow court procedures. 

Mursi, who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood, was ousted by the army in July, in response to mass demonstrations across the country.
