The High Constitutional Court's general assembly approved Adly Mansour's appointment as Chief Justice on Sunday.

Mansour will replace Maher al-Behiery who retires on June 30.

A 2011 amendment requires the court's head to be elected from among the three top HCC deputies, following the general assembly's approval.

Before the amendment, Egypt's president could appoint the Chief Justice from outside the court and thus without the general assembly's approval.

The general assembly has also agreed to appoint Ragab Selim as the chairman of the commissioners' board.
