A group of demonstrators attempted to break into the Muslim Brotherhood's headquarters in the Gharbiya governorate on Tuesday, an eyewitness said.

They hurled petrol bombs and stones at the building, the eyewitness added.

The demonstrators earlier attempted to barge into a services office belonging to the Brotherhood, but later withdrew.

At the same time, a state of cautious calm dominated the scene at the governorate's city council after clashes between demonstrators and Brotherhood supporters had stopped.

The clashes at the city council left 26 people injured.

Central Security Forces fired teargas canisters to put an end to the clashes and disperse the two sides after some Muslim Brotherhood supporters had fired birdshot at the demonstrators and assaulted them with bladed weapons.

The protesters responded by hurling stones at the Brotherhood supporters.

Some demonstrators gathered earlier today at the city council to protest the appointment of Ahmed al-Bili as the new governor.
