CAIRO, Jan 24 (Aswat Masriya) – The banned Muslim Brotherhood group mourned on Saturday the death of its deputy Supreme Guide Gomaa Amin, who died in London, Britain at the age of 81.

"Amin … passed away outside his home country, surrounded by repression, oppression and tyranny," the Muslim Brotherhood said in a statement.

Born in 1935, Amin officially joined the Muslim Brotherhood in 1951. He was imprisoned in 1965 and until 1971, after a fierce crackdown on the group which involved the execution of its leader at the time, Sayyid Qutb.

Amin was arrested once again during the rule of toppled President Hosni Mubarak in 1994. He joined the Muslim Brotherhood's guidance bureau in 1995.

The Brotherhood reminded of Amin's efforts "in preaching", saying he was patient against "detention and imprisonment during the reigns of tyrants."

The Muslim Brotherhood has come under attack since the military ouster of its leader Mohamed Mursi from the presidency in July 2013 following mass protests against his rule. The military-installed regime has since then rounded up thousands of Brotherhood members and supporters and killed hundreds of protesters in confrontations with security forces.

Egypt listed the Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation in December 2013 and insists it is behind the stringent wave of militancy which has targeted security personnel since Mursi's ouster. The Brotherhood continuously denies the accusations.
