The American University in Cairo (AUC) declared on Monday that classes at its new campus in New Cairo will resume on Wednesday after an agreement was reached with student demonstrators.

The university’s Facebook account emphasized that negotiations between the university administration and students resulted in approval to reduce the increase in student tuition fees to 2.3 percent - rather than seven percent.

Dr. Amr Salama, the Advisor to the Minister of Higher Education, said during a press conference where president of the university Lisa Anderson attended on Monday that classes will resume on Wednesday at the university’s new Cairo campus, reported the Middle East News Agency.

Salama pointed out that they responded to the six main demands of the students, which include the abolition of the Disciplinary Board that was formed to punish the students involved in the recent events at the university. And instead form a fact-finding committee to report on the events that have been happening and hold whoever wronged accountable whether from the students or the university administration.

He added that it was "decided to form an advisory committee to the President of the University involving students, parents' council and members of the faculty and staff. It was agreed on the participation of students in discussions for the preparation of university budget, and agreed to change the subjects’ registration system that was really hard for the students".

Hundreds of students began protesting two weeks ago against the increase of tuition fees by about seven percent. The university had responded that this increase was already announced and included in the annual budget, therefore cannot be changed as it includes operational expenses of the university and the salaries of employees. However, they said they can negotiate next year’s budget.

The American University in Cairo suspended all classes last week in light of what they described as a threat posed by the continued closure of the gates by student protestors on students and facilities.
