CAIRO, Apr 27 (Aswat Masriya) - Interest in women's affairs is among the focal priorities of the government, said Egypt's premier as he launched a nationwide strategy to combat violence against women on Monday.

Violence against women is one of the most prominent of these priorities since it is a community matter that affects society as a whole, Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb was cited by state agency MENA as saying.

He added that violence against women is a violation to cultural and religious values in Egypt.

Mehleb tasked the National Council for Women with coming up with the strategy which is due to run from 2015 to 2020.

The council will coordinate with state organisations and NGOs to maximise efforts aiming to reduce community and family violence directed at women and to rehabilitate victims.
