Egypt’s Shura Council (upper house of parliament) approved on Sunday the High Constitutional Court's proposed amendments to the law on exercising political rights and will refer the draft law back to the court to be reviewed.

The top court had sent the draft law back to the Shura Council, stating that nine of its articles were unconstitutional.

The court had reservations on barring members of the military and the police from the right to vote, saying that this ban violated the country's new constitution, which stipulates that all citizens have the right to vote.

Accordingly, the Shura Council in today’s session granted military and police personnel the right to vote in elections by no later than July 2020.
