CAIRO, Oct. 23 (Aswat Masriya) - A police officer was killed and three recruits were wounded in an attack targeting an armored police car on Friday in North Sinai, a security source told Aswat Masriya.

An explosive device was planted at the western entrance to Arish city on the International road connecting Arish to Qantara, the source from North Sinai's security directorate said.

Security forces deployed armored vehicles and set up check points along the coastal road after the attack.

Eleven policemen were also wounded in an explosion on Wednesday.

A curfew has been imposed in parts of Sinai since October 2014, following a deadly attack that killed 33 army personnel.

The Egyptian army undertook the first phase of a security operation in Northern Sinai last September. "The right of the martyr" operation lasted for 16 days and the army announced that it will begin the second phase.

Egypt is battling an insurgency in North Sinai that peaked following the military ouster of former President Mohamed Mursi in July 2013, after protests against his rule.
