CAIRO, Feb 5 (Aswat Masriya) - Egypt's Court of Cassations turned down on Thursday a request for a retrial of 58 defendants accused of violence in Alexandria's Sedi Gaber which involved throwing boys off a rooftop in July 2013.

Footage of one of the defendants throwing a boy off a building on July 5, 2013 created an uproar following the overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood after mass protests against his rule.

The said defendant was sentenced to death in March 2014, while 62 other defendants in the case received lengthy life sentences in May 2014.

Eighteen defendants were sentenced to life in prison, eight were sentenced to 15 years, 35 were sentenced to 10 years and a juvenile defendant was sentenced to seven years. Five of the defendants were sentenced in absentia; they did not request a retrial.

The court upheld all sentences on Thursday, leaving no room for any further appeals.

The defendants were accused of murder, attempted murder, illegal assembly, robbery, arson, using violence against public employees, vandalism, and possession of unlicensed weapons.

Violence erupted nationwide in July 2013 following Mursi's military ouster, as his supporters protested calling for his reinstatement.
