CAIRO, June 29 (Aswat Masriya) An Egyptian court has set July 22 for the retrial of political activist Alaa Abdel Fattah and 25 others over clashes that took place in downtown Cairo last November.

Abdel Fattah and the others were sentenced to 15 years in prison earlier this month and put under surveillance for the next five years.

They were also fined 100,000 Egyptian pounds each.

The defendants were charged with protesting without permit and attacking and resisting the authorities among other crimes.

They were arrested after the authorities dispersed a demonstration denouncing military trials for civilians and the protest law outside the Shura Council on November 26.

Investigations revealed that Abdel Fattah attacked a police officer, withdrew his Walkie-Talkie and helped other defendants escape, the court had said.

A protest law passed towards the end of last year obliges demonstrators to inform the authorities of their intention to assemble three days prior to their scheduled events.
